My Plaything - Shyla Stylez is the newest offering in Digital Sin's long line of fuck-it-yourself video adventures. As with almost everything else in the world of porn, perhaps the most personal of movie genres, the answer is, of course, "Depends." Shyla Stylez, in spite of being Canadian, is almost a California archetype, 5'3" tall, blonde, and sporting a massively enhanced pair of 32D breasts. She looks suntanned and fit, and she has just a hint of the exotic about her eyes. In addition to the tan and the body and all, most of the action takes place in a welter of sport-themed accessories – basketball and baseball pillows, a baseball bat, sport-logo blankets – which kind of reinforces the active-outdoor-beach-girl image that she projects. She’s more than a bubbly blonde, though; in fact, she’s not bubbly at all. She projects a sultry sexuality that’s definitely at odds with her looks.

If you can’t get past fake tits, Shyla’s not your girl, but if you don’t mind – and frankly, hers, although big, are a nice pair considering their provenance – this DVD is a nice change from the usual run. Shyla is a veteran, and she knows how to have sex without overplaying her hand. Her expressions, if not wholly convincing (one has to maintain some cynicism, after all) seem at least reasonably sincere. And back to the sultry for a moment – one doesn’t usually think of blondes as smoldering, but Shyla is, at least here.

The DVD itself is unremarkable, at least in terms of technical innovation. As usual, the camera work is clear, the sound is good, and the come shots are fake, except for one or two. It’s hard to see the logic in which ones are real and which are not, but whether there is any or rhyme or reason or no, the fake ones are always a little unsettling. If I were sitting home with a bottle of lube and a free hour, I would be upset about the half-assed nature of the popshots; with the digital technology available to even the most amateur of animators, you would think a convincing shot could be provided, and that’s not even taking into account the possibility of actual orgasms. I’m just saying, I think it would be disruptive; if the purpose of an interactive DVD is to put the viewer into the action, it seems counterproductive to put in something that is so obviously fake.
